Heavy Metal Sunday dives under the covers..
Happy 2011, metalheads! Once again, we celebrate the cold winter months (you weirdo antipodean people keep your comments to yourselves, it's cold at HMS World Headquarters. That's what counts) by piling on the covers.. metal covers of non-metal songs, metal covering metal, and one really interesting take on a metal classic.
But we start with a video I have been itching to share with y'all since I found it in late September. Disturbed is a Chicago-based metal band that have been around for about sixteen years now. Originally a nu-metal group, the eventually shed that image for a more straight forward metal sound, while retaining some of the grunge elements that influenced their early work. The band has released five studio albums over the past decade, four of which have debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.
Today's track comes from their third album, 2005's Ten Thousand Fists. Possibly the band's most overtly political album, the title track was part of a viral marketing campaign that involved forwarding an email. When enough forwards had occurred, the track was unlocked for download. Also on the album was a cover of Genesis' Land of Confusion originally on 1986's Invisible Touch. The video for the Disturbed cover was done by comic book legend Todd McFarlane
So, put on that Snuggie (you know you have one) and enjoy Disturbed - Land of Confusion
Fun fact? Disturbed's mascot is just called The Guy, and yes, I want to design him for Champions. In case you've never seen it, here's the original Genesis video, which is equally awesome.
Next week: Italian heavy metal goddess covers Emo British rockers.
