True, but it can get rather silly. In my current D&D game we were hauling around half a ton in coins at one point. The game also ignores that in a gold rush you have a corresponding increase in prices, especially when a prospector who hit a big strike comes into town.

One of my favorite cheesy movies is The Long Ships (1964) where the MacGuffin is the "Mother of Voices", a giant golden bell that turns out to be much larger than anticipated. That's the kind of thing I like, where dealing with the treasure can be as much of a struggle as getting it.

The story in The Long Ships may have been inspired by the true story of the Great Bell of Dhammazedi, which was thought to be close to 300 tons when cast and is currently buried in the mud of the confluence of the Bago and Yangon Rivers in Myanmar.
