After years of negelct, chemotherapy, and Dilantin, I've got a pretty disastorous mouth. I've falt out lost one bottom inciscor, and had a couple of molars just shatter. Everything else is holding firm, for now.

I do need to go, but dentists scare the hell out of me.

[identity profile] figmo.livejournal.com 2003-03-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
To quote my father, "Nobody ever died in the dentist's chair." While that's not 100% true (someone can have something happen, but that's independent of what's going on), it pretty much is accurate.

It won't kill you to go to a dentist. They have cool chairs you can ride up and down in. They have scary names for their equipment just to freak out non-dentists, just like we "freak the mundanes" at SF cons.

You will feel soooo much better once your teeth are fixed. Really. what's to be afraid of? It's only your mouth. They do stuff to fix it. It's not like they're taking a scalpel and cutting off your shlong, for heaven's sake! They even have nitrous, and when a dentist administers it, it's legal.

Today's dentists are going out of their way to undo the bad rep dentists have gotten in the past. It's not like you're going to encounter my father; he'd tell you to put your arm up when it hurt, but when you put your arm up, he'd snap, "Put your arm back down. It doesn't hurt yet."

These days they have things like TV screens and VCRs to distract you while they do their thing. If you prefer, they'll happily turn them off and tell you exactly what they're doing (I prefer that, but I'm weird).
