OK, this weekend I write!

Last night I was struck by an idea for a short story, one that channels Harlan Ellison and Ray Bradbury. The inspiration comes from reading about language experiments using Furbies and remembering when the Mars Pathfinder/Sojourner stopped responding to attempts to contact it. There was a theory that Sojourner, lacking direction, began circling Pathfinder asking for instructions. That image was one of the saddest things I've ever encountered. [livejournal.com profile] kshandra mentioned that it reminded her of There Will Come The Soft Rains from The Martian Chronicles

It's also an attempt to write a story that lacks a single sapient, self-aware character. And to make you care about the characters all the same.

This one just feels right. I have beginning middle and end, and all my "bang" moments. I'm not going to post it, because it might just be one I can sell.
