"The recent unpleasantness on LJ has spawned a new community, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts, intended to show Six Apart (LJ's owners) exactly how pervasive fandom is, how many fans (in the fannish sense of the word) there are here. It's not intended to be a posting community; just... if you read fanfic, or write it, or support the concept of it, then go here and join. And then post something about it yourself, to tell your FList."

I don't like fanfic. I find most of the overtly sexual stuff sets off my squick alarms at levels not seen in years. I find casual descriptions of non-consensual sex insulting, knowing too many survivors. However, I find mindless censorship even worse. Six Apart has caved in to a woman who is, at best, batshit insane. Six Apart needs to restore all the deleted journals and communities, issue a massive apology to all users, and then learn that any whackjob can claim to be an organization with LEO connections

Very much agreed. I don't care for fanfic at all, it just feels sad to me. But censorship is generally both silly and sad, and self-censorship is no exception. Wasn't there some ridiculous boob controversy a year back or two?

...that said, child pornography and child molesters are things I don't think are remotely healthy. Shit, I've worked as a teacher for long enough to want to see such scum working the mines of Stekenjokk with their bare hands. Permanently. But sheesh, can't LJ separate out the abuse survivor communities from the pedophile sickos?

There was a huge dust up over icons featuring breast feeding. Then there was the famous AOL "dirty word" purge that included the word "breast." That wiped out thousands of communities dedicated to breast cancer, swimming, and recipes.

Sadly, many of your compatriots reserve the word "censorship" for suppression by the government. If it's not the government, it's not censorship.

What's "LEO", BTW?

Law Enforcement Officer/Organization.

The first thing that came into my mind was "Low Earth Orbit". It just didn't sound like it fit the context.

Too few TLAs out there, I think.

That's usually where my mind goes with LEO, but I wrote this while traking multiple threads about the situation, so the law enforcement meaning popped up.
