Flashback to 2010. The Giants win the National League West on the last day of the season. Giants Nation goes nuts with the hope that this might finally be the year. The Giants came west in 1958, and in that time managed only three National League pennants, and no World Series wins. We were due.

Bay Area musician/producer Ashkon grabs a karaoke version of Journey's Don't Stop Believing and writes lyrics to celebrate that this might be the season.

It was. San Francisco Giants, your 2010 World Series Champions. Swing and miss, and that's it.

This still makes me very happy, as it takes me back to the excitement of that October, as we came closer and closer to the win. Fun note, of all the players mentioned, only Buster Posey is still with the Giants.

Black and Orange 'till I die.

comments

True story: I first heard of Bill Kirchen, and his amazing take on Hot Rod Lincoln while I was still driving for PODS. I had been sent to drop a container in the Santa Cruz Mountains during a raging rainstorm. It would have been a hard drop on a sunny day, and I was doing it in running water up to my ankles.

Driving home, with my shoes on the floor of the passenger side of the cab, and my socks on the dash near the vents, driving my big truck on Highway 9 in a deluge, I was listening to KPIG, and they played this. I was hooked. We've seen him a couple of times, and every time he plays Hot Rod Lincoln it's different.

comments

Order and organization are paramount to him. He may believe in personal order and live by a code or standard, or he may believe in order for all and favor a strong, organized government. Lawful neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you are reliable and honorable without being a zealot. However, lawful neutral can be a dangerous alignment when it seeks to eliminate all freedom, choice, and diversity in society.

Race:
Elves are known for their poetry, song, and magical arts, but when danger threatens they show great skill with weapons and strategy. Elves can live to be over 700 years old and, by human standards, are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. Elves are slim and stand 4.5 to 5.5 feet tall. They have no facial or body hair, prefer comfortable clothes, and possess unearthly grace. Many others races find them hauntingly beautiful.

Class:
Sorcerers- Sorcerers are arcane spellcasters who manipulate magic energy with imagination and talent rather than studious discipline. They have no books, no mentors, no theories just raw power that they direct at will. Sorcerers know fewer spells than wizards do and acquire them more slowly, but they can cast individual spells more often and have no need to prepare their incantations ahead of time. Also unlike wizards, sorcerers cannot specialize in a school of magic. Since sorcerers gain their powers without undergoing the years of rigorous study that wizards go through, they have more time to learn fighting skills and are proficient with simple weapons. Charisma is very important for sorcerers; the higher their value in this ability, the higher the spell level they can cast.

Take the test.

( Raw Data )

comments

Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

From kath8562, I got:

Wine Wine has actually been part of my life since childhood. My parents enjoyed good wines, and we were all taught at an early age how to properly sample a glass. I'm not really a connoisseur, but have learned enough to understand different varietals, viticulture regions, and the importance of the terroir on the final product. When drinking, I p[refer good reds like Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir. I dislike overly sweet reds. Not a huge fan of white wines; when I do drink them I prefer extremely light, crisp wine like a good Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc. I do need to try to sample more local vintages from the Livermore and Santa Cruz Mountains AVAs

Army Ah, the best of times, the worst of times. I had a lot of fun in the Army, saw some amazing places and things, and grew quite a bit. Unfortuantly, my own demons caught up with me. I am still amused that the one job skill I came out of the service with is being an expert janitor.

Color I never really developed a good sense for color. I'm terrible at matching things, tend to wear black and darker colors simply because I know they match (mostly) and leave all more complicated matches to those with a more refined taste. My favorite colors are black, orange, and red.

Party It's funny, but I rarely really have a good time at a party unless I'm running it! Being in a group of people, many of whom I know only slightly or not at all, really sets off my antisocial tendencies. But, if I'm the one running around to make sure that everyone has a drink, and that the chip dip hasn't run out, I'm able to enjoy the party a little more. A big part of this is my utter inability to remember faces. I may have known you for years, and still not recognize you. I do miss the Traveller parties we used to throw at Baycon.

Monster For me there is only one monster: Reed–Sternberg cells. These are the monsters that lurked in my body for years, turning my own lymphatic system against me. The monster that turned my body from being me into being The Thing that I was locked in battle with. The monster that still plague my nightmares almost 20 years later.

comments

Let me know if you want me to ask you nosy questions.

1. How many keys on your key ring?

Seven. Car key, three for the apartment, two for work, one for the lock that holds the spare gas tank in my truck bed. Plus a bottle opener, 4GB flash drive, nail clipper, and my library card.

2. What kind of books do you like to read?

Science fiction, mostly. Hard SF and military SF are my preferred subgenres. I also read a ton of history. Currently working on A Traveller's History of Venice and Daily Life in the World of Charlemagne. Also read a lot of alternate history stuff.

3. What are some of the different jobs that you have had in your life?

Gravedigger, Infantryman, Car washer, Janitor, Retail sales, and of course being a driver of everything from a hatchback for a dental lab to 34' flatbeds. Currently a dispatcher/reservations agent for a limo service.

4. What is your best childhood memory?

I don't have a single best, but I have many fond memories of going to Twin Lakes Beach in Santa Cruz (setting for the movie The Lost Boys) and spending hours playing in the surf.

5. If you had a big win in the lottery, how long would you wait to tell people?

Other than immediate family, I'd want to wait until the check was in the bank, and we had spoken to a financial advisor to set up a plan for sustaining the money to provide a steady income. Then I'll announce that I'm throwing room parties at every Worldcon for the next ten years.

6. If you could change something about your home, without worry about expense or mess, what would you do?

Can I move the CalTrain tracks? We're about 110' feet from them. Actually, I'd love to have a top of the line shower where we can set preferred temperatures. I waste more time fiddling to get the right level when I go in, and having presets would be great for those days when I just want to scald myself silly.

7. Would you go bungee jumping or sky diving?

It's been far too long since I threw myself out of a perfectly good aircraft.

comments
