Strange de Jim

In the immortal Herb Caen column (which was fought over at my house each morning, the cry "who has Herb Caen?" rang out often) the oddest and most frequent source of items was Strange de Jim. Never identified, doing interviews with a pillow case over his head, his quips greatly influenced my sense of humor.

There's an article about him on SFgate. This site has some of Strange's greatest hits. For more about Herb, the man who ran the city from his Loyal Royal typewriter, see this site.

Happy Birthday Macintosh!

It was twenty years ago today the Steve Jobs introduced the little $2,500 box to the world, and changed computing forever. So grab a slice of cake, put a silly smile on your face, and enjoy the best commercial ever made: 1984. (Directed by Ridley Scott, of all people. It has his touch.)

Well, I'm just shocked.

Head of U.S. weapons search quits. CIA adviser says he doubts Iraq had huge stockpile.

Well, now even the people Bush appointed are saying that we invaded based on wrong information and lies. All those claims at the 2003 State of the Union? I want to see where he got those numbers.

Over 600 dead US and allied soldiers, five more today.

Somebody's having a bad day...

So far, heading north on Almaden Expressway, in the last five minutes...

1 San Jose Fire Department engine
1 Ambulance
1 County Search and Rescue Engine
1 SJ Police Department patrol car.

It was raining last night, so the roads are slick. Almaden heads into so odd curves and hills north of us, so I'm willing to bet some fool decided he could drive at sixty on slick asphalt.

2nd fire engine just went by. Really bad day.

Five minutes later: 2nd S&R rig, and what I assume to be a Battalion Chief's truck. Now there's something going by I don't recognize; what looks like a red truck with a conex container on the back.

A tribute to Captain Kangaroo

In haiku.

Bob Keeshan has died
Mourners come to grieve and cry
Ping-pong balls rain down
